Rwanda was once a supper power in East and central Africa. Under King Rwabugiri, Rwanda had an outstanding army known as Inkotanyi, from which the former Rwanda Patriotic Front derived its nickname.
King Rwabujiri expanded Rwanda up to Lake Albert on the current border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The lake was called Rwicanzige. He once controlled the whole of Kivu region in Tanzania and extended Rwanda to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Masaka in central Uganda was once part of Rwanda. The word Masaka cames from the word "amasaka" which means millet in Kinyarwanda.
When Rwabugiri captured Ankole, he wanted to fight Buganda in central Uganda but he stopped at Masaka, where his warriors built granaries to store millet, "Ibyagi bya Masaka".
Only the wisdom of the Kabaka (king) of Buganda stopped Rwabugiri's expansion to Buganda. When Rwabugiri sent messengers to ask the Kabaka to supply him with food for his troops, the messengers returned with only two bunches of bananas (matoke)and a few beans. The Kabaka explained that if he had sent a lot of food, his people will have remained hungry.
Rwabugiri said "I won't attack the Kabaka becease he is a Mugabo". Mugabo means a wise, brave or trustworthy person.
