[edit] Word or phrase of Ugandan English
Detoother (noun); pl. detoothers; also "dentist"
Detooth, detoothing, detoothed (verb)
[edit] Meaning or equivalent in standard English
Gold-digger. A man or woman who associates or has a sexual relationship with a member of the opposite sex primarily for material gain.
A detoother or dentist is not the same thing as a sex worker or prostitute. Unlike a sex worker, a detoother does not make a demand for money upfront.
[edit] Usage
- As a noun, one can say: "There are many detoothers in Kampala". "Dentist" is used in the same way.
- As a verb: "She has detoothed many men in this town."
[edit] Origin of the word or phrase
Possibly originated as a slang at Makerere University, which has the unfortunate (possibly false) reputation of habouring many detoothers. It was popularised by leisure columns in newspapers and Ugandan popular music.
The term employs the image of someone pulling out another's teeth, hence the equivalent term "dentist". See also "pliers".
